Today was the last official day in the business course put on by the Kalum band and community futures. Overall the course has been very helpful and has helped me to run my business better.  The Aboriginal Business and Entrepreneurship Skills Training course was a two week course where participants learned many small business fundamentals.  Four students from Freda Diesing School were chosen to attend.

Marty Eisner, who was the teacher for the class, was quite professional, easy to approach and very informative.  Over all, Marty put together what has been a very inspiring business course.  I am glad that I attended.

www.nigelfoxartworks.com has been upgraded. The website has a blog interface now, making it a lot easier to update. Expect to see more frequent updates, including what is going on in Freda Diesing School right now.

Below is an image of one of my most recent paintings, Blue Raven.  This painting was done as part of the final exercise in the first semester.  The exercise was on “crest” design.  A “crest” is a design representing some sort of animal or human.  Often crests indicate clan membership.  Within the Tsimshian tribe there are four crests: raven, eagle, wolf and killer whale.  Terrace, where Freda Diesing School is located, is on traditional Tsimshian land.

Geo Mckay, a carver from Terrace, BC, came in and did a presentation for the entrepreneur’s workshop today.  Geo is part owner of the House of Carvers in Terrace.  Geo has been carving for 45 years.  Geo has a manner about him that is very straight forward.  We learned a lot about the business of carving, from marketing to business relationships to payment options.
