Solo Exhibits

July-August 2011; “Northern Revisions” Solo Exhibit; Museum of Northern BC

This was my third solof exhibit. Again, the museum showed a record turnout to see a few new works mixed among many of my older works. This exhibit displayed both my representitive works along side my newer west coast designs.

August 2010; “A Fox Year in Painting” Solo Exhibit; Smithers Art Gallery

This was my second solo exhibit. I displayed 37 new pieces and the gallery had a record turnout of about 70 people for the opening night alone.

April 2009; “Origins” Solo Exhibition Old Ranger Station, Telkwa

For April of 2009 I was offered a solo exhibition to display my artwork at the Old Ranger Station Gallery in Telkwa, BC. I told my dad about this and he wanted in on it, too; so, it ended up being a group exhibition. My dad, an Ontario College of Art grad, excels at portraiture with chalk pastels on cardstock.

May 2011; Group Exhibit; Spirit Wrestler Gallery, Vancouver, BC

Nigel has been selected among the students at Freda Diesing School to show one work at their yearly Northern Exposure exhibit showcasing the works of Freda Diesing School students.  This is the first time that Nigel will be displaying in Vancouver, BC.  The Spirit Wrestler Gallery is the most prestigious native art gallery in western Canada.

May 2011; Group Exhibit; 1st Annual Terrace Studio Crawl, Terrace, BC

Nigel will be participating in the 1st Annual Studio Crawl, where numerous artists display their work at various venues around Terrace, BC.

April 2011; Group Exhibit; Northwest Community College, Terrace, BC

Nigel displayed numerous paintings and carvings at the year end exhibit for the students of Freda Diesing School.

March 2011; Group Exhibit; University of Northern BC, Prince George, BC

Nigel displayed a painting at the University of Northern BC, alongside other students from Freda Diesing School.

March 2011; Group Exhibit; Kitimat Museum and Archives, Kitimat, BC

Nigel Displayed a number of his paintings at this exhibit, alongside the paintings of other students at Freda Diesing School and the works of Lyle Wilson, and Sammy Robertson.

February 2011; Group Exhibit; Terrace Art Gallery, Terrace, BC

This was a very successful group exhibit that Nigel was part of in 2011 as a student in Freda Diesing School, showcasing a number of his newest works alongside other students at Freda Diesing School.

December 2010; Group Show; Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art
This was the Christmas group show for the art school Nigel attended in 2010.

November 2010; Silent Auction; Charity Dance and Auction for Jenna Schroeder
Jenna is a young girl who was suffering from lukemia. Her parents needed some money for expenses and so a charity dance/auction was held. I donated a piece called “Allegory for optimism” because it seemed fitting.

February 2010; 2010 National Painting Competition; TOSH
My art was chosen from hundreds of submissions, some as far as Quebec, to exhibit in the Old School House Gallery national art competition, co-inciding with the 2010 Olympics. There were just under 60 finalists in total.

July 2009; Group Exhibit IM Artswalk; Wells, BC
I displayed numerous pieces and gave an artists statement. This was mainly a quasi-academic venue.

July 2008 Silent Auction Fundraiser for Houston Food Bank
I had sold a painting in order to raise money for the Houston Food Bank. The painting raised $300 and I was featured in a half-page color article in the July 30th article of Houston Today.

June 2006 Silent Auction 12 Stones Outreach, Topley Victory Church.
This was a silent auction for fund raising for when my church from Kamloops came to Topley in the summer of 2006. During this exhibition, I sold 2 paintings and kept a third.

Oct 2003-Aug, 2005 Worship Art 12 Stones Chapel in Kamloops
Worship art is basically painting to what you believe God is telling you, often in a public forum. I did this most Sundays and a few other days for 2 years.

Education

Fall 2010-April 2011, Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art; Terrace, BC

During this time, Nigel studied at the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art in Terrace, BC.  Here Nigel studied two-dimensional and three-dimensional art forms in the Northwest coast native style: Haida, Tsimshian, Haisla, Nisgaa and Gitsxan. Nigel also learned about the history of the art and culture of the people who developed it.

Courses and Workshops

Winter 2008 Art History 152 Smithers, BC

This was a course put on by Brenda Cobill at NWCC. It covered art from the late Byzantine/Gothic period into modern times. During this course I made some friends, learned a bit more about the technicalities of art and was exposed to a side of art that I never realized before.

May 2007 Jack Reid Workshop Smithers, BC

This was a fun time. Jack is quite the character and a few things that he said stuck with me, like “you’ve gotta light your own fire.”

Major Commissions

April 2011-Crest Pole carving on Old Growth Log in Terrace, BC — Nigel worked with Nathan Wilson in order to carve 5 crests onto a twelve foot old growth red cedar log.
April 2011-Canadian Museum of Civilization accepts photographs as part of Freda Diesing School legacy project
